How to fall in love with your smile

Did you know that smiling is more than just an expression, but also a great way to boost your overall health?

This is because when smiling, “your brain releases tiny molecules, called neuropeptides to help fight off stress. Then other neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin and endorphins are produced.” However, the majority of adults are not all that confident in their smiles, and as a result, try to avoid smiling altogether.

With that in mind, here are some top tips that you can use to fall back in love with your smile and feel more confident in your daily life

Brush your teeth twice a day. While this advice may seem rather obvious (after all, it's one of the first lessons our parents teach us), a recent study found that one in five people do not brush their teeth twice a day. Daily brushing is your best defence against cavities and other complications as it helps to remove bacteria from the surface of your teeth. This means that it's important that you stick to your hygiene routine.

Seek dental help when you need it. If you avoid going to the dentist - you aren’t alone. However, regular dental and orthodontal appointments are essetnial when it comes to maintaining a bright, healthy smile. This is because they’re able to address any issues quickly and efficiently. As a result, you should visit the dentist at least once a year, or more often if you’re dealing with any particular complaints. For example, if you’ve lost a few teeth here and there, they could fit you with a partial denture. This will restore your confidence in your smile as you’ll no longer have to guide any gaps in your smile.

Try out tooth whitening. There are various reasons why your teeth may not be as white as they once were. For example, they could be caused by the consumption of certain ‘staining’ substances such as coffee, or natural ageing. This is because as we get older, the enamel around our teeth gets worn away, therefore exposing the ‘yellowish’ dentin underneath. Thankfully, there are various ways in which you can combat this issue. For example, you could try out charcoal tooth whitening products.

Use a quality mouthwash & floss. Brushing your teeth is a great way to keep your teeth clean, but its not always a fool-proof method. This is because bacteria or bits of food can get caught inbetween your teeth or in areas the bristles can’t reach. Mouthwash and floss, therefore, are great ways to up your dental hygiene game. However, you should always ensure you use quality products that are recommended to your by your dentist or hygienist.

Use an electric toothbrush. Another way in which you can brighten your smile (and therefore lift your confidence) is by using an electric toothbrush.. This is because they are much more effective when it comes to reducing plaque build-u and allow for a more thorough clean. They’re also a great choice for young children as it can help them perfect their brushing technique and ensure they are applying the right amount of pressure.
